Exploring Colossians with Robert

Hello church! We are pleased to announce that we will be having a midweek discipleship class for May and June with Robert Henderson. He is graduating from seminary, and as a final course, he will be putting his learning into practice! In case you haven’t already met him, we wanted to share a little about him.

Robert was born in England, and unlike his parents (who also attend South Calgary), lost his accent long ago! Before attending seminary, he previously worked in the trades, acquiring two journeyman tickets as an electrician and as a machinist. However, God had other plans! Now, after back-to-back degrees, he is ready to serve God in the church, wherever he may lead. Well, maybe after the summer—as a little rest is in order!

Speaking of rest and relaxation, Robert has a few interests that keep him occupied. He loves anything outdoors or active, such as hiking, camping, and biking. He loves to read (having worked at Better Books & Bibles for several years), and cooking (despite his current skill level).

That said, Robert also enjoys teaching and sharing God’s word. He will be leading a Discipleship Class in the near future on Colossians for anyone interested! “Colossians,” he says, “gives a wonderful picture of Jesus’ supremacy, while speaking to such themes as prayer, thanksgiving, unity, reconciliation, union in Christ, and even cosmic powers! Central to the letter, however, Paul addresses a circulating philosophy (false teaching) that seeks to undermine and compete with Jesus.”

You might be thinking, “How is this relevant for us?” Well, although our circumstances may be altogether different than those of the Colossians’, we face many similar challenges today! Therefore, reading and studying the book of Colossians will (among other things) teach us what it means to live the Christian life in a world full of distractions. In doing so, we will discover that we were in fact raised with Christ (Col 3:1), are presently hidden with Christ (3:3), and will be revealed with Christ (3:4)! What do those things mean, and why are they important? Come to the class and find out!
