South Calgary has had a long history of exceptional ministry to seniors under the leadership of Sylvia Mgla. Since her retirement several years ago, Pastor Sam has taken the lead for this ministry and beginning in May, George and Deborah Ridley have enjoyed working with Mary Parker to continue the ministry.
Our desire is to have one event each month, either a Friday coffee and Bible study called “Coffee and Chat” or a Friday Seniors Lunch with a devotional. Mary continues to provide amazing food at all the events. We had 20 people at the last coffee and 29 at the previous lunch.
The goal is to have the senior’s ministry an integral part of the mission of South Calgary: “To be passionate followers of Jesus Christ, to see all made whole.” To accomplish this, our focus at the “Coffee and Chats” is discipleship – topics that help us grow as disciples of Jesus and put our faith into action; and our focus at the lunches is evangelism. In addition, we want to do as many home and hospital visits as our schedule allows.
We are also wanting to expand the ministry to include younger “seniors.” We believe that those more recently retired or semi-retired have much valuable input to provide to the ministry.
Here are two items that we ask the church to be praying for as we prepare for the Christmas Lunch on December 13:
That we will be able to clearly share the message of Jesus.
That people will invite and bring non-Christian friends.
